Vineyard Notes
The winter of 2016 - 2017 was longer and colder than we are accustomed to, but the vines saw little or no damage as a result. Bud break was on May 1st and was followed by good early heat and a long very dry growing season with almost no rain from June to September. We had smoky skies from mostly distant forest fires and very little to no wind. The smoky skies kept maximum temperatures down with average daily temperatures between 30 - 35 degrees C. The grapes for this single vineyard blend were all grown on our estate vineyard, within a "stones throw" of each other in the River Rock Vineyard, which surrounds our winery in Oliver, BC. The vines were planted in 2003. The vineyard is all on south facing slopes where soils are composed of rock, sand and gravel and rich in calcium, laid down during the last glacial recession.
Production Notes
Each varietal contained in the blend was hand picked and de-stemmed. Approximately 80% of the fruit was left whole, uncrushed. The grapes were cold soaked between 3 - 5 days and then fermented in both stainless steel tanks (2200,2850,5000 litre) and small fermentation totes to maximize skin to juice contact. The Cabernet Sauvignon and some of the Merlot were cofermented (approx 50 /50 blend) the wine was transferred, following pressing, to tanks to settle then transferred to barrels where malolactic fermentation was completed. Wine was aged in French oak barrels (33% new) for approximately 14 months. Following aging, blending trials were done, final filtering, and bottling resulting in the 2017 Stones Throw blend.
