Vineyard Notes
The winter of 2018 was reasonably normal with no damage to vines. Bud break was on April 27th. May was nice and warm getting the vines off to a good start. June and July cooler and unsettled weather. August weather returned to seasonal norms. September was wetter than usual but October was good grape growing weather. The grapes were harvested in mid to late October. The grapes for this single vineyard blend were all grown in our River Rock Vineyard, which surrounds our winery in Oliver BC. Each grape varietal contained in our signature blend was planted in 2003 and was situated where it had growing conditions best suited to the varietal. The vineyard is on south facing slopes where soil is composed of rock, sand, and gravel that is rich in calcium, laid down during the last glacial recession.
Winemaker Notes
Each varietal contained in the blend was handpicked. The grapes were sorted prior to destemming. Approximately 80% of the fruit was left whole berry, uncrushed. The grapes were cold soaked between 3-5 days and then fermented in both stainless steel tanks (2200,2850 and 5000 litre) and small fermentation totes to maximize skin to juice contact. The Cabernet Sauvignon was co-fermented with some of the Merlot. Upon completion of fermentation the wine was transferred to the press and then to tanks to settle before being transferred to barrels where malolactic fermentation was completed. Wine was aged in French oak barrels (33% new) for approximately 12 months. At this time select barrels were chosen for the blend. After blending the wine was returned to barrels and further aged another 6 months, for a total of 18 months prior to final filtration and bottling.
Other Notes
"Pretty nose that is very lifted. Lots and lots of layers here. Ripe fruit, tea, earthy with an elegant with long. Nice freshness with polished ripe tannins. Nicely done will age very well!" 93 Points, Jennifer Huether, MS, National Wine Awards of Canada 2022
